The Wireless Web in the US (HDML Course)

HDML (Handheld Device Markup Language)

Note: This HDML crash-course is just a short introduction of HDML, ccWAP.com is quite certain, that this language will loose its importance very fast and therefore we will not go into this matter more thouroughly. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. Please write to: hdml@ccwap.com

Other important features and language attributes:

Hyperlinks:

In HDML Hyperlinks do not use the famous <HREF>. Take a look at this example:

Example Hyperlink:

<A TASK=GO DEST=celtics.hdml LABEL=Celtics ACCESSKEY=1>

Again, the LABEL attribute is responsible for displaying something (in this case it would be "Celtics" when a user selects a link.

Images:

HDML can also display pictures. This has been solved fairly easy by the developers of HDML.

Example Image Card:

<HDML VERSION=3.0>

<DISPLAY>

<IMG SRC="images/bird1" ALT="Larry Bird">

</DISPLAY>

</HDML>

The ALT attribute let's the programmer choose an image title. This title is not mandatory. If there is no name, there still has to be ALT="" in order for everything to work properly.

Of course, there is much more to HDML like forms, user input, special actions and more. But again, we from ccWAP.com would like to note that the future of HDML is certainly not a long one. The many other features of WML, especially the script language WMLscript, have already established the huge advantages of WML against HDML. In a short time, most HDML-phones and pages will disappear from the American market and WML will conquer the entire world, unless i-Mode does not invade the US, much like it has Japan.

For more information on WML please consult our WML X-Press Course, or download our free WAP Compendium.
