Short Overview i-Mode

Introduction

Ever since its introduction in February 1999 has i-Mode been the most successful mobile internet technology of the World. By “most successful” we do not mean the world-wide user number, but rather the quickness by which this technology has spread over Japan. If WAP would have boomed all over the world like i-Mode did in Japan, there would be approx. 600 million people who are using WAP on a regular basis today.  In Japan, the number of i-Mode users is close to a sensational 13 million at the day of this writing. This means that 10 % of Japans total population are using i-Mode after not even 2 years of its existence!

The inventor of i-Mode is the Japanese company NTT DoCoMo. The start of i-Mode has turned many NTT DoCoMo stockholders into millionaires in an instant. The programming language for i-Mode is cHTML or i-Mode compatible HTML. cHTML (Compact HTML) is basically a trimmed down version of regular HTML. One can also make i-Mode sites with pure HTML if they know about the limitations of the i-Mode devices. For example can most i-Mode devices not display JPEG images or tables. The regular i-Mode page is very small and has only a few pictures to keep the download times as short as possible.
