2. Toshiba and Nokia
A cooperation between Toshiba Europe and Nokia have agreed on a partnership which will concetrated on WAP. Toshiba has been a leading hardware manufacturer and is not entering the service market for the first time. Within 3 years Toshiba is planning to get 5 % of their revenues from WAP applications and services. The 2 companies also teamed up with the small company Moon AG from Germany. Moon AG will be responsible for developing a WAP Portal. ( www.toshiba.co.uk )
3. DotWAP plans "Superpalm"
The Australian company dotWAP will bring out an add-on tool for the Palm V. With this so-called Palm Cradle, which will come out this Fall, the user has instant access to the wireless web 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. The annoying procedure of the dialing-up and receiving busy signals seems to be an end of the past, if the dotWAP Palm Cradle delivers on its promises. Obviously, the customers won´t pay the online time but rather the amount of data transferred. (www.dotwap.com )
4. Over 180 million WAP-users in 2005
According to the US company Strategis, there will be approx. 183,7 million users on the wireless web. The 3G technologies, especially UMTS will be responsible for the biggest boom in 2 years, adds Strategis. GPRS, the pre-technology to UMTS, is already being installed on a few networks in Europe and Asia.
5. Phone.com and Conversa plan a voice-activated WAP-browser
While the wireless web is still in the beginning Phone.com and Conversa are planning a a WAP-browser which is voice-activated. The navigation of the wireless web will be possible without pressing a single button. The first browser will just be an addition to regular browsers, while the next generation will be an independent product.
6. Send e-mail without WAP
Etrieve.com realized an idea right between e-mail and voice-mail. The US company started a system which makes it possible for anybody to read (i.e. hear) their e-mail anywhere with a mobile phone. The computer will read the e-mail to the user and the user can then answer just by talking. The spoken text of the user will then be changed into WAV-format and sent to the recipient as an e-mail with a WAV attachment. This service costs $ 50 a month and can be reached at www.etrieve.com .
7. GPRS tested successfully
Nortel Networks and Telstra have tested GPRS successfully. The test was part of an Australian GPRS congress. With speeds of up to 50 kb/s GRPS is five times as fast as today's GSM technology. The tests have been excecuted on a notebook computer with a cellular phone and on a Palm Pilot handheld. Telstra is the leading telecommunications provider for mobile phones and will be introducing the new CDMA technology to Australia this fall. 8. WAP Portal in Malaysia
WAP Portal Sdn Bhd is the first commercial WAP Portal in Malaysia. In the beginning of this July, the WAP Portal will finally open. With the help of Ericsson the portal will provide the users with news, travel information, regional business news and an e-mail service. After the first phase, an eCommerce platform, stock trading and banking transactions will also be possible. The WAP Portal will be able to handle more than 100'000 users.
9. AT&T and Nokia test EDGE
Nokia and AT&T started to test the new "Third Generation (3G) wireless standard EDGE (Enhanced Data Rate for Global Revolution). The most experts are actually referring to EDGE as pre-3G or 2.5G. Nokia and AT&T want to demonstrate that EDGE is finally ready for the use on big networks. EDGE will finally be introduced to the market (on TDMA and GSM nets) in early
2001.
10. Yahoo in Taiwan
Yahoo and the 4 leading telecommunication companies in Taiwan will start a WAP Portal in Chinese. Yahoo will be provide the content while the other companies provide the environment and infrastructure. More than 700 daily news stories, stock quotes, weather info, e-mail and a big list of links will be included into the world's first first real WAP Portal in Chinese.
11. Wap Forum Membership number has hit 500 (June 20, 2000)
Scott Goldman, the CEO of the official WAP Forum has stated that by now there are more than 500 companies and organizations in the forum. Since the beginning of the year 200 the number of members has doubled itself. The WAP Forum, which has been founded in 1997 has had only 100 members just a year ago. The popularity of the membership has risen to new heights; in June 2000 alone the membership number has increased by 25 % ! By now the WAP Forum represents 200 million mobile users world-wide. 12. WAPJAG.com offers 40 search engines
WAPJAG.com now offers 40 search engines. The user can look through the search engines for WWW and WAP-content in 11 different languages. All search engines are "fed" from the same database, though. This would mean that the there are not 40 search engines -as WAPJAG.com says- but rather one search engine with 40 different versions. (www.wapjag.com )
13. 3,5 Million WAP-Users in Germany
The German speaker of the WAP Forum, Christian Hutmacher, said that at the end of this year there will be around 3, 5 Million WAP-Users in Germany. Right now, more than 400´000 Germans are on the wireless web. Despite this rather high number, people should know that of the 30 Million mobiles in Germany only 1,3 % WAP-compatible. But now the number of new WAP-mobiles is increasing very fast, which lead the WAP Forum to the promising prognosis of 3,5 Million WAP users.
14. Amazon in Germany goes wireless
The most popular bookstore on earth started a wireless ordering system in Germany. Amazon.de customers can now order books, CD´s and music cassettes with their WAP-phone. All other articles (for example videos, DVD´s) are not included yet. (www.amazon.de )
15. UMTS auction in Austria
On Monday, July 10, 2000 the Austrian auction for the UMTS licenses started. Each interested company has to hand in a bank guarantee of 128 millions Euros (approx. 128 millons US Dollars). Each company can aquire a maximum of 2 band widths. It is already clear that the Austrian licenses won´t come close to the prices paid in the UK.
16. QXL and Orange
QXL. one of the biggest auction sites in Europe have agreed on a partnership with Orange France. QXL will now offer their services on the WAP portal of Orange France which means a big win in the fight against the other European giant Ebay. (www.qxl.com )
