1.Interxion and 3G Mobile join forces for Austrian UMTS battle

The internet company Interxion has agreed to help 3G Mobile, a subsidary of
Spains Telefónica Móviles, build the UMTS infrastructure in Austria. This
outsourcing will accelerate the set-up process tremendously. Telefónica will
be sending an expert team of 3G Mobile and some hardware to Interxion.
The Austrian 3G race is still open. The first complete networks are not
expected before early 2003.

2. Slovenias only 3G-licence goes to Mobitel

The Slovenian goverment was not able to sell more than 1 3G licence.
Mobitel, a subsidary of the state-owned Slovenian Telecom has aquired the
licence for approximately 100 Million $, while Simobil, one of the big
competitors of Mobitel, did not want to pay that amount of money. Because
the outturn of the "auction" was not what the government expected, they are
planning to run another auction within the next 2 years. If this auction
will be cancelled, Mobitel will have a vast monopoly on 3G in all of
Slovenia.

3. Bouygues Telecom may get back into French 3G-race

Several months ago, Bouygues Telecom has quit the French 3G-race stating
that the conditions of the auction were not acceptable. Since the French
government has recently changed some of the conditions to make the run for
the 2 open 3G-licences more attractive, Bouygues Telecom is now rethinking
whether it should join the bid again. The 2 3G-licences left are also
getting the attention of bidders from other nations who want to get a piece
of the French communication market.

4. Music recognition software on your mobile

A new kind of software now enables anyone to find out the artist and song of
any song they are listening to. First the customer has to dial a certain
phone number to get connected. Then, with the start of a special application
users can hold the mobile phone to a stereo, TV or radio where the song is
playing. If the song is in the database of the main computer on the other
line, then the computer will send the mobile an SMS including the name of
the artist and song. This service will soon be available all over Europe.

5. Shut down of mobiles with a single SMS

A Dutch mobile expert has successfully demonstrated some serious security
glitches on Nokia phones. At his demonstration he showed the world that it
is possible to completely disable Nokia mobiles with a single SMS. The short
message was generated by a PC and included a small program which made the
phone shut down at once. If this has happened all the mobile owner can do is
change the SIM card and start up the phone again. Any other manipulation
will not work. Other experts agree; this demonstration indicated that SMS
and WAP viruses are not science-fiction. With the improved technology, the
viruses will also become smarter. UMTS-technology will also not stop the
attacks on mobile devices.

6. Frost & Sullivan claims that bad marketing caused WAP-failure

Frost & Sullivan, an established world-wide known consulting company has
published a study on the causes for the failure of WAP in Europe and the
rest of the world. The study mostly indicates that bad marketing, not the
high rates and slow transmission rates, are the cause of turning WAP into a
flop. In the future, Frost & Sullivan advise, companies should concentrate
their efforts on communicating to the customers what exactly people can do
with a WAP phone. Special services, which are helpful for people on the road
can become popular very fast, once the customers realize the value of such
location-based services.

7. Cable & Wireless buy Exodus Communications

Cable & Wireless, a multi-billion Dollar company has bought the ailing
American internet firm Exodus Communications. Although no exact data exists
on the price, there are estimates that Exodus cost Cable & Wireless as much
as $ 850 million. Exodus Communications has been near bankruptcy as will now
be revived by an emergency finance "infusion" from the new owner Cable &
Wireless. Earlier this year, the UK-based C & W has already aquired Digital
Island for more than a quarter billion $. Experts are unsure whether such a
buying frenzy will not lead Cable & Wireless into bankruptcy themselves.
